At 85 years of age, Ivan continues to inspire and delight with his extraordinary contributions to bonsai. His most recent Australiana-themed bonsai landscape exhibit, crafted with immense care and creativity, was a standout display at our 40th Annual Show! It captured the resilience and beauty of the Australian bushland after a fire. Ivan began envisioning this project in October 2023, and what unfolded was nothing short of remarkable.
A Bushfire Scene Comes to Life
Ivan wanted to create a uniquely Australian display that told a story of regrowth and survival. He visited the Forestry Commission to source suitable plants, such as eucalyptus species, not only to reflect native flora but also to provide authenticity with edible species for koalas. Additionally, Ivan sought out burnt branches from local fire services to replicate a realistic post-bushfire setting. But he didn’t stop there. Ivan meticulously researched and sourced elements to complement his display’s narrative. He visited the Museum of Fire in Penrith to find fire extinguishers, buckets, and other firefighting tools, which he incorporated seamlessly into the scene. A trip to Bunnings and countless hours scouring for materials like driftwood, hardwood stumps, and signage solidified his attention to detail. Ivan even drilled hollow stumps to create realistic nesting spots for lorikeets and cockatoos, using spray paint to char branches for an authentic burned effect.
Crafting Every Detail
With his characteristic humour, Ivan remarked, “I lost count of how many trees I used. I can’t count past 11!” His exhibit featured Forest Red Gums, River Red Gums, and Black Butt trees, carefully sourced and arranged over months. He added sand-filled fire buckets, half-pine logs to replicate chopped trunks, and even scatterings of ash and black mesh to maintain a tidy yet realistic presentation. Animals played a pivotal role in Ivan’s scene. A mother koala and her baby perched in a gum tree, a kangaroo hid among the burnt undergrowth, a lorikeet fed on the ground while its baby awaited a meal in a nest, and a cockatoo nested grandly at the top of the tallest tree. Ivan’s dedication extended to crafting small, magnetized signs for “Koala Crossing” and “Kangaroo Crossing” posts to guide onlookers through the story of his landscape.
The Challenges and Triumphs
Creating a display of this magnitude came with its challenges. “I had sleepless nights,” Ivan admitted. “Broken sleep—can I do the job?” The sheer size and weight of the exhibit were daunting, but his determination never wavered. As Ivan jokingly put it, “I must remember to put my brain into gear before using it!” Yet, with each hurdle he overcame, his passion for bonsai and storytelling shone brightly.
A Worthwhile Endeavor
Ivan’s bushfire regrowth scene resonated deeply with viewers, sparking admiration for the thought and effort behind it. “I was delighted by the comments about my display,” he shared. “It was how I intended it to be understood.” When asked if he’d do it all again, his answer was unequivocal: “You bet.”
Through his artistry, Ivan reminds us that bonsai is more than just an art form—it’s a way to tell stories, evoke emotions, and connect with nature’s resilience. His exhibit is a testament to creativity, dedication, and a love for sharing beauty with others.
